Plan your trip

How Many Days Do You Need in Taipei?

Three days for a first visit, four or five if you want day trips.

The short answer: three days is the sweet spot for a first visit. That's enough for the big sights, a few neighborhoods, a night market or two and an evening show, without spending the whole trip on the MRT. Two days works if you keep it tight. Four or five days lets you add day trips out of the city, and a week lets you go south to Tainan too.

One day: the highlights

One day in Taipei means choosing. Pick one side of the city and stay there: the old west side around Longshan Temple, Ximending and Dadaocheng, or the east side around Taipei 101 and Elephant Mountain. Finish at a night market. It works for a layover or a stop on a longer Taiwan trip, and it will leave you wanting more. → A 1-day Taipei plan

Two days: the essentials

Two days lets you see both sides of the city: one day for the temples, old streets and markets of the west, and one for Taipei 101, the Chiang Kai-shek Memorial Hall and Da'an's cafes and food streets. It's a full two days, so book your hotel near an MRT station to save time. → The 2-day Taipei plan

Three days: the sweet spot

A third day is where Taipei opens up. Add the National Palace Museum, the Maokong Gondola and its tea houses, or a slow afternoon in the Beitou hot springs. You also get time for the things that make Taipei special: a concert or a show in the evening, a long dinner, a breakfast of soy milk and egg crepes. → A 3-day Taipei plan

Four or five days: add day trips

Use the extra days to get out of the city. The easy classics are Jiufen in the hills, the riverside town of Tamsui, the sky lanterns of Pingxi and Shifen, the rock formations at Yehliu and the hot springs of Wulai. Base yourself in Taipei and go out and back. → All day trips from Taipei

A week or more: go south

With a week, you can split your time between Taipei and the south. The high speed rail makes Tainan an easy add-on, and it's a very different city: slower, older and full of temples and street food. We live there, so we're biased. → Taipei to Tainan · Tainan itineraries on Inside Tainan
