About Inside Taipei

Two people, years of Taipei life, and a soft spot for the MRT.

Hi, we're Vicky and Jason. Inside Taipei is our guide to Taiwan's capital: the city we lived in for years, written for people visiting it now.

Our Taipei

We both lived in Taipei for years. When it came time to buy a home, we did the research, looked hard at the prices, and realized the city we loved most was Tainan. So that's where we put down roots.

But Taipei gave us a lot, and three things stayed with us:

  • The MRT. It's an amazing service, and so convenient. Almost anywhere you want to go is a short walk from a station.
  • The buses. Friendly for visitors and easy to navigate, and they fill in everywhere the MRT doesn't reach.
  • The shows and the restaurants. There was always a concert, a performance or a new place to eat. That's why this guide has a whole section on shows and nightlife, including the part most visitors struggle with: buying tickets.

Vicky

Vicky was born and raised in Tainan, and lived in Taipei for years. She brings the local's view: how Taiwanese people actually use the city, from the restaurants to the ride home.

Jason

Jason is the foreigner of the pair. He has lived in Taiwan for around a decade, years of it in Taipei. Like every newcomer, he had to learn the city the hard way: which card to tap, which exit to take, how to get a ticket to a show. That's exactly the stuff visitors need, so when something needs translating for a first-timer, that's Jason's job.

How we write this guide

Every fact on this site comes from an official source or established press, and every page says when we last checked it. Hours, fares and prices change, so we link the official pages and tell you to check before you go. We give the nearest MRT station for every place, because that's how Taipei works. And we'll always be honest about what's worth your time.

Welcome to our Taipei. We're glad you're here.
