Xinyi (信義) is new Taipei: the planned business district around Taipei 101 (台北101), with glass towers, malls linked by skybridges, wide pavements and the city's busiest Friday nights. Most visitors come for two views, from the top of Taipei 101 and of it from Elephant Mountain, but there is more here: an old military village under the tower, a former tobacco factory turned design park, and Sun Yat-sen Memorial Hall.
- MRT Taipei 101/World Trade Center Station (Red Line, R03); Xiangshan (R02) for Elephant Mountain; Taipei City Hall (BL18) and Sun Yat-sen Memorial Hall (BL17) on the Blue Line
- Best time afternoon, with Elephant Mountain at sunset
- How long half a day to a full day
Getting there
Two MRT lines frame Xinyi. The Red Line stops right under the tower at Taipei 101/World Trade Center (R03), and one stop further at Xiangshan (R02) for Elephant Mountain. The Blue Line runs along the north side, with Taipei City Hall (BL18) for the malls and Sun Yat-sen Memorial Hall (BL17) for the hall and Songshan Cultural and Creative Park.
What to see
Taipei 101. The 89th-floor observatory is the classic view of the city. → Taipei 101 observatory guide
Elephant Mountain (象山). A short, steep stair climb that gives the famous view of Taipei 101 from above, best at sunset. → Elephant Mountain guide
Four Four South Village (四四南村). A cluster of low brick houses at the foot of Taipei 101, built in 1948 for workers of the 44th Arsenal and their families after the government's retreat to Taiwan. Taipei's first military dependents' village is now a small heritage park with exhibitions, shops and a cafe, and the contrast with the tower right behind it makes the photo.
Songshan Cultural and Creative Park (松山文創園區). A former tobacco factory, built from 1937, now a creative park with exhibitions, design shops, a lake and big lawns. The factory was listed as a city heritage site in 2001 and the park opened in 2011.
- Hours: outdoor areas open 24 hours; indoor areas 08:00 to 22:00 (individual exhibitions set their own hours and tickets).
- Address: No. 133, Guangfu South Road, Xinyi District.
- MRT: Sun Yat-sen Memorial Hall Station (Blue Line, BL17), Exit 5, about 350 meters; or Taipei City Hall (BL18), Exit 1, about 450 meters.
Sun Yat-sen Memorial Hall (國父紀念館). The large memorial to the founder of the Republic of China, set in a park with a view of Taipei 101 across the trees. It sits on top of its own Blue Line station, BL17, at No. 505, Section 4, Ren'ai Road.
Where to eat
Xinyi's restaurants are mostly in the malls around Taipei City Hall and in Taipei 101 itself. For street food, ride the Green Line to Songshan (G19), or take a taxi, for Raohe Street Night Market. → Raohe Street Night Market on NightMarket.tw For the original Din Tai Fung, see Da'an.
