Good news first: unlike Tainan, where the big markets take turns through the week, Taipei's main night markets open every evening. So the question is just which one suits your night. Here's the short answer, then a little more on each.
- First time, one market: Raohe Street Night Market (饒河街觀光夜市). One straight street, packed with food, right by Songshan Station.
- The famous one, with shopping: Shilin Night Market (士林夜市). The biggest name, food plus clothes and games.
- Serious eating, compact: Ningxia Night Market (寧夏夜市), near Zhongshan and Shuanglian.
- Near Taipei 101: Linjiang Street Night Market (臨江街觀光夜市), also called Tonghua Night Market.
| Market | Hours | Nearest MRT | Good for |
|---|---|---|---|
| Raohe Street | 17:00 to 24:00 | Songshan (Green Line, G19) | First-timers |
| Shilin | 16:00 to 24:00 | Jiantan (Red Line, R15) | Food and shopping |
| Ningxia | 17:00 to 23:30 | Shuanglian (Red Line, R12) | Classic Taiwanese snacks |
| Huaxi Street and Wanhua | 16:00 to 24:00 | Longshan Temple (Blue Line, BL10) | Old Taipei, after Longshan Temple |
| Linjiang Street (Tonghua) | 18:00 to 24:00 | Xinyi Anhe (Red Line, R04) | Dinner near Taipei 101 |
| Nanjichang | 17:00 to 24:00 | None close; bus or taxi | Local food, few tourists |
| Liaoning Street | 18:00 to 24:00 | Nanjing Fuxing (Brown Line BR11, Green Line G16) | Seafood stir-fry supper |
| Gongguan | 17:00 to 24:00 | Gongguan (Green Line, G07) | Cheap snacks by the university |
These are the markets' general hours. Each stall keeps its own, so some open later or close early, and a few take a day off in the week.
Raohe Street Night Market
Raohe is the one we'd send a first-timer to. It is a single street with a gate at each end, two rows of shops along the sides and a row of stalls down the middle, so you can't get lost: walk up one side and back down the other. The east gate stands beside Songshan Ciyou Temple, by Songshan Station. Look for the Fuzhou black pepper buns just inside that gate, pork ribs stewed in medicinal herbs, oyster vermicelli and stinky tofu. It gets very crowded at the peak of dinner time; come near opening or later in the evening.

Shilin Night Market
Taipei's best-known market is less a street than a district: lanes of food stalls, clothes and games around Dadong, Danan, Wenlin and Jihe roads, plus a food court. It is the market for eating and shopping in one go. Try the pan-fried buns, the giant fried chicken cutlet, sausage wrapped in sticky rice, herbal pork rib soup and sesame cold noodles. The nearest stations are Jiantan and Shilin.

Ningxia Night Market
Ningxia is short, dense and all about food. It is known for classic Taiwanese snacks: oyster omelette, fried taro balls, pork liver soup and shredded chicken on rice. Easy to combine with Dadaocheng or a walk around Zhongshan.
MRT: Shuanglian Station (Red Line, R12) or Zhongshan Station (Red Line R11, Green Line G14). → Ningxia's dishes and opening hours
Huaxi Street and the Wanhua markets
Around Longshan Temple, several old market streets run together: Huaxi Street Night Market (華西街觀光夜市), Guangzhou Street, Wuzhou Street and Xichang Street. It is the oldest-feeling of the lot, with herbal tonic soups (Huaxi Street still serves snake soup), thick squid soup, goose, gua bao (braised pork belly buns), and stinky tofu and sweet potato balls on Guangzhou Street. Go after an evening visit to Longshan Temple.
MRT: Longshan Temple Station (Blue Line, BL10), Exit 1, about 5 minutes on foot. → Huaxi Street's layout and hours
Linjiang Street (Tonghua) Night Market
A neighborhood food street in Da'an, close to Taipei 101 and Elephant Mountain, so it's the natural dinner stop after a sunset hike. Braised snacks (lu wei), gua bao, stinky tofu, tangyuan hot or iced, and oyster omelette.
MRT: Xinyi Anhe Station (Red Line, R04); Liuzhangli (Brown Line, BR07) is also close. → Linjiang Street (Tonghua) on NightMarket.tw
Nanjichang Night Market
Nanjichang Night Market (南機場夜市), South Airport in English, is the locals' market, in the lanes off Section 2 of Zhonghua Road, with few tourists and very good food: sesame oil chicken, stinky tofu, fresh-baked sesame flatbread, chicken rice and Taiwanese spring rolls. No MRT station is right beside it; Xiaonanmen (Green Line, G11) and Longshan Temple (BL10) are the nearest, but a bus or taxi is often easier.

Liaoning Street Night Market
Liaoning Street Night Market (遼寧街夜市) is a short street in Zhongshan known for sit-down seafood stir-fry restaurants where you pick your seafood from the display, plus boiled squid, danzai noodles, oyster omelette, sesame oil soups and goose. More of a supper with friends than a stroll-and-snack market.
MRT: Nanjing Fuxing Station (Brown Line BR11, Green Line G16), Exit 2, about 4 minutes on foot. → Liaoning Street's hours and nearest exit
Gongguan Night Market
Gongguan Night Market (公館夜市) is the student market beside National Taiwan University, in the lanes off Roosevelt Road. Cheap and cheerful: scallion pancakes, sweet potato balls and gua bao.
MRT: Gongguan Station (Green Line, G07), Exit 1. → Gongguan Night Market on NightMarket.tw
Night market tips
- Bring cash, in small notes and coins.
- Go hungry and share. Portions are small, so a group can try ten things.
- Finish your food before the MRT. Eating and drinking are not allowed inside stations and trains. → MRT rules
- Check what's open tonight. NightMarket.tw keeps a live list: open tonight.
Good to know: heading south too? Tainan's night markets are some of the best in Taiwan, but they rotate by day of the week. → Tainan night markets on Inside Tainan
