Taipei's yellow taxis are plentiful, metered and reasonably priced, and Uber works here too. You won't need them often with the MRT this good, but they are the answer late at night, with luggage, in a group, or for a ride straight to the airport.
- Flag fall NT$85 for the first 1.25 km
- Then NT$5 per 200 m, plus NT$5 per 60 seconds when crawling under 5 km/h
- Night surcharge NT$20 a trip from 23:00 to 06:00, based on when you get in
Taxis
Taxis in Taipei, New Taipei and Keelung share the same meter fares: NT$85 for the first 1.25 km, then NT$5 for each 200 m, and NT$5 for every 60 seconds the car is stuck below 5 km/h. Between 23:00 and 06:00 a flat NT$20 is added per trip.
- Hailing. Wave one down where it is safe to stop, or use the taxi ranks at the big stations.
- Telling the driver where. Have the address in Chinese ready on your phone. A Google Maps pin is the easy way to show it.
- Paying. Cash always works. Taxis showing the EasyCard logo take the card.
Uber
Uber operates in Taipei, with the usual upfront price in the app and no language barrier over the destination. You can request rides from both airports, and the app guides you to the pickup area.
To and from the airport by car
A car is the door-to-door option from Taoyuan Airport, worth it with a lot of luggage or a group. Uber's own page for Taoyuan Airport put the average fare to or from Taipei at about NT$1,442 and the average trip at 44 minutes (about 46 km) when we checked; your quote in the app is what counts. The Airport MRT is far cheaper if you are traveling light. → Getting to Taipei
Good to know: the late MRT and a short taxi ride make a good pair. Ride the MRT as close as you can before midnight, then take a taxi the last stretch.
