Yingge and Sanxia: A Day Trip from Taipei

Taiwan's pottery town and a red-brick old street with a carved temple, joined by the new Sanying Line.

Yingge (鶯歌) and Sanxia (三峽) are neighboring districts in the southwest of New Taipei. Yingge is Taiwan's pottery town, with an old street full of ceramics shops and the Yingge Ceramics Museum. Sanxia has a red-brick old street and Zushi Temple, rebuilt after the war under the painter Li Mei-shu and famous for its carving. Since the Sanying Line opened in June 2026, the two are a few metro stops apart, so you can see both in one easy day.

  • Train Taipei Main Station to Yingge Station, about 27 minutes and NT$46 on a local train
  • MRT Sanying Line (Light Blue Line, LB): Ceramics Old Street (LB09) for Yingge, National Taipei University (LB07) for Sanxia

How to get to Yingge and Sanxia from Taipei

Train to Yingge

Take a Taiwan Railway train from Taipei Main Station to Yingge Station (鶯歌). On the weekday timetable we checked, there were two to four trains an hour for most of the day. Local trains took 21 to 35 minutes, most about 27, for NT$46; the few Tze-Chiang and Puyuma express trains that stop took about 20 minutes for NT$71. Local trains take your EasyCard.

The Sanying Line between the two towns

New Taipei Metro's Sanying Line (三鶯線), the Light Blue Line (LB), opened on 30 June 2026. It runs 14.29 kilometers and 12 stations, from Dingpu (LB01) through Sanxia to Yingge, in about 30 minutes end to end. Trains run from 06:00 to midnight. Fares are NT$20 to NT$35 by distance, and a NT$60 Sanying Line one-day pass gives unlimited rides on the day you buy it. Tap an electronic ticket card such as EasyCard. The stations you need:

  • National Taipei University (LB07) for Sanxia Old Street and Zushi Temple.
  • Yingge (LB08) for the Taiwan Railway station, about two minutes' walk away.
  • Ceramics Old Street (LB09) for Yingge Old Street and the Ceramics Museum.

MRT all the way

Take the Blue Line (Bannan Line) from Taipei Main Station to the end at Dingpu Station (BL01): 27 minutes and NT$40. Change there to the Sanying Line (LB01). It is the easy way home from Sanxia. → How the Taipei MRT works

What to see in Yingge

Yingge Old Street (鶯歌陶瓷老街)

Yingge's old street is the heart of the pottery town: streets lined with ceramics studios, design shops and local food. Take your time and compare shops before you buy.

  • MRT: Ceramics Old Street Station (Sanying Line, LB09), about 4 minutes' walk.
  • From Yingge train station: leave by the Wenhua Road (文化路) exit, turn right and keep walking along Wenhua Road into the old street area.

New Taipei City Yingge Ceramics Museum (新北市立鶯歌陶瓷博物館)

Taiwan's first museum devoted to ceramics opened in November 2000. It covers the history of pottery in Taiwan, how ceramics are made, and contemporary work. The Ceramic Art Park around the building is free.

  • Where: No. 200, Wenhua Road, Yingge District. About 10 minutes' walk from Yingge train station along Wenhua Road, or about 8 minutes from Ceramics Old Street Station (Sanying Line, LB09).
  • Hours: 09:30 to 17:00 on weekdays, 09:30 to 18:00 at weekends and on holidays. Tickets stop 30 minutes before closing.
  • Closed: the first Monday of each month (the next day if that Monday is a national holiday), Lunar New Year's Eve and Lunar New Year's Day. The next closures are 2 November and 7 December 2026.
  • Entry: NT$80. Children under 12 go free, and everyone gets in free on International Museum Day (18 May), National Day (10 October) and Taiwan Culture Day (17 October).

What to see in Sanxia

Sanxia Old Street (三峽老街)

Sanxia Old Street usually means the southern part of Minquan Street (民權街), about 200 meters of red-brick arcaded shophouses, with buildings that date from 1911. In the Qing dynasty the town was a center of cloth dyeing, and you can still sign up for an indigo-dye workshop here.

  • MRT: National Taipei University Station (Sanying Line, LB07), about 13 minutes' walk.

Good to know: the snack to try is the golden croissant (金牛角), a horn-shaped bread roll that is crisp outside and soft inside. Several shops on the old street sell it. The Liberty Times traces it to a baker at the Sanxia market who came up with it in the 1990s.

Zushi Temple (三峽清水祖師廟)

Sanxia's Qingshui Zushi Temple, a short walk from the old street, was founded in 1769. It was rebuilt after an earthquake in 1833 and again in 1899 after Japanese troops burned it in 1895. After the Second World War the painter Li Mei-shu (李梅樹) led a third rebuilding and brought in touches of Western art, and the temple is now known for its stone, wood and copper carving. Give yourself time to look closely at the carved columns.

  • Where: No. 1, Changfu Street, Sanxia District.
  • Hours: 05:00 to 22:00.
  • MRT: National Taipei University Station (Sanying Line, LB07), about 14 minutes' walk.

A plan for both in one day

  1. Morning in Yingge. Take the train to Yingge (about 27 minutes). Walk along Wenhua Road to the Ceramics Museum for the 09:30 opening, then browse the old street.
  2. Over to Sanxia. From Ceramics Old Street Station (LB09), ride the Sanying Line two stops to National Taipei University (LB07) and walk about 13 minutes to the old street.
  3. Afternoon in Sanxia. Old street, a golden croissant, then Zushi Temple, which stays open until 22:00.
  4. Home by MRT. Sanying Line from National Taipei University to Dingpu (LB01), then the Blue Line to Taipei Main Station (27 minutes, NT$40).

On the first Monday of the month, when the museum is closed, swap the order or spend longer in Sanxia.

Timing tips

  • Check the museum calendar. It closes on the first Monday of each month.
  • Watch the weather. In a typhoon the Sanying Line can stop early, as it did on 23 October 2026, so check New Taipei Metro's news before you set out. → Best time to visit Taipei
  • Buy a day pass if you will ride the Sanying Line three or more times.
