Things to do

Taipei Museums

One world-class collection, a handful of good smaller museums, and two old factories turned into culture parks.

Taipei's museums are a good reason to hope for rain. Most are cheap, close to an MRT station, and closed on Mondays, so plan around that.

Taipei Fine Arts Museum

The Taipei Fine Arts Museum (臺北市立美術館, TFAM) shows modern and contemporary art and is the home of the Taipei Biennial. The building itself is worth seeing: shaped like a hash sign (#) in plan, it is a traditional courtyard house with a modern edge, as the city's tourism office puts it, and is beautifully lit at night.

  • Entry NT$30; free on Saturday from 17:00 to 20:30, and for children under 6

National Taiwan Museum

The National Taiwan Museum (國立臺灣博物館) is the oldest museum in Taiwan, with roots in a colonial-era exhibition of 1899 and a 1908 opening. Its main building stands in 228 Peace Memorial Park, on the site of a Qing-dynasty Mazu temple. One ticket also covers the Natural History Branch, a short walk away at No. 25, Xiangyang Road.

Huashan 1914 Creative Park

Huashan 1914 Creative Park (華山1914文化創意產業園區) is a former winery turned into Taipei's busiest culture park: brick warehouses full of exhibitions, pop-up shops, live shows, cafés and small design stores. What's on changes every week, so look at the park's calendar. The outdoor areas are open 24 hours; shops and exhibitions keep their own hours.

  • Address No. 1, Sec. 1, Bade Rd., Zhongzheng District
  • MRT Zhongxiao Xinsheng Station (Blue Line BL14, Orange Line O07) or Shandao Temple Station (Blue Line, BL13)

Songshan Cultural and Creative Park

Songshan Cultural and Creative Park (松山文創園區) was the Songshan Tobacco Factory, built in 1937 as a model modernist factory and closed in 1998. Now its buildings hold design exhibitions, shops and markets, with an ecological pond and green space around them. Outdoor areas are open 24 hours and indoor spaces 08:00 to 22:00; individual exhibitions charge their own fees.

  • Address No. 133, Guangfu S. Rd., Xinyi District
  • MRT Sun Yat-sen Memorial Hall Station (Blue Line, BL17) or Taipei City Hall Station (Blue Line, BL18)

Good to know: almost every museum here closes on Monday. If Monday is your rainy day, the culture parks, Taipei 101 and most temples stay open.
