The yellow bikes at every MRT exit, and how to ride one as a visitor.

YouBike is Taipei's public bike share, the yellow bikes docked outside nearly every MRT exit. It is perfect for the short hop the MRT doesn't quite make. Two ways to rent

As a member

Members register with a Taiwanese mobile number, then link an EasyCard or iPASS on the YouBike website, or a credit card in the YouBike app. After that you tap your card on the dock to unlock a bike. If you have a local SIM for your stay, this is the cheaper option.

As a visitor, with a credit card (single rental)

  1. Download the YouBike app and choose single rental (temporary member).
  2. Add a Visa, Mastercard, JCB or UnionPay credit card and confirm your email address. A NT$3,000 pre-authorization is held on the card; each authorization lasts 120 hours.
  3. Add the public bicycle accident insurance in the app. You can't rent without it.
  4. At the dock, tap "scan to rent" in the app, press the scan button on the dock, and scan the QR code on its screen (or type in the code). When the screen says to take the bike, pull it straight back.

Returning a bike

Line the front wheel up with the guide slot on the ground, push the lock into the dock all the way, and wait for the screen to confirm the return.

Good to know: the pre-authorization on a single rental is released automatically after a normal return, but how long it takes depends on your card's bank.
